Easter Family Fun

This Easter hundreds of children explored an Easter egg trail, expertly set out by the Friends of Lytham Hall. They enjoyed a bouncy castle, got lucky at the tombola and munched plenty of chocolate. The RSPCA were on hand with bunnies and guinea pigs that were in need of a home. They also provided advice about the best ways to keep pet rabbits. A great day was had by all.

In the future we really hope to include the Dovecote in the egg hunt, as it would have been the place where the Clifton got their eggs from for centuries. The dovecote on the estate was built in the eighteenth century and inside there is room for around 850 doves. The birds enter through the roof of the dovecote and nest inside. A rotating ladder allows access to the gamekeeper to look inside the nests. Dove eggs were used to supplement dinners, and doves themselves were eaten too.

At the moment it’s too dirty with bird mess which carries some nasty diseases to allow access inside, but it’s on our wish list to be able to open the dovecote on occasion.
