Remembering Augustus Wykeham Clifton
This weekend sees the 100th anniversary of Augustus Wykeham Clifton's death, on 9 May 1915. Born in 1829, he was the younger brother of Colonel John Talbot Clifton and saw action in the Crimean War. He married Lady Bertha Hastings, and in 1871, after he left the army, he and his wife came to live at nearby Warton Hall. Whilst Col. John Talbot was away, Wykeham was seen as the unofficial 'Lord of the Manor' and as such played a part in Lytham, crowning Rose Queens and performing other ceremonial duties.
Last year we wrote this about him on our blog
